Family Weekend

We thank all the students and families who participated in Family Weekend 2024! We hope you greatly enjoyed spending time together, experiencing Butler’s campus, attending the many events, and exploring the Indianapolis area. We look forward to Family Weekend 2025!

Family Weekend is for everyone! Events are open to all Butler students and their families. Students, please join us for activities. You can come by yourself, with your friends, or make a plan for your family to participate with you.

We look forward to celebrating together at Family Weekend! The following are a few pieces of general information.

Events are open to all Butler students and their families. Student can join by themselves or make a plan for family to participate with them.
All families and students will receive registration information via email when registration opens.

4:45 – 6:30 PM	Marching Band Practice	West Campus practice field (Map)	Come watch the marching band rehearse before their performance on Saturday! Bring a blanket, a picnic dinner, and maybe some ear plugs. We’d love to have you! No registration necessary.
5:00 – 6:30 PM	Lacy School of Business (LSB) Family Weekend Reception featuring Career & Professional Services	Dugan Hall Atrium (Map)	Join the Lacy School of Business for a reception featuring opportunities to mingle with the Career and Professional Success Team, LSB Faculty, and LSB Staff. There are also opportunities to take a tour of Dugan Hall and learn more about how the Career Development Program can take your students from the classroom to the boardroom! Light Appetizers and Beverages will be served. No registration necessary.

6:00 – 8:00 PM	S’mores with Sigma	Fairview House, Fire Pits Rain location: Efroymson Diversity Center (Map)	Come join the ladies of the Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc for a night of delicious smores, community, and music during our Annual S’mores with Sigma event! 7:00 – 9:00 PM	Butler Volleyball v. Virginia DePaul	Hinkle Fieldhouse	Watch the Butler University volleyball team compete against DePaul University. Tickets can be purchased on the Butler volleyball website.
7:30 & 8:30 PM	Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium Tours	Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium	Come to the Holcomb Observatory for planetarium tours beginning at 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM followed by a telescope viewings of Saturn and the Moon, weather permitting. Doors open at 6:45 pm. Admission is $5 for children and students under 18 years old and $8 for adults. Cash or credit is accepted at the door. Butler students are admitted at no charge with their Butler University ID. *No registration is necessary on the Family Weekend registration form.
8:00 – 11:00 PM	Baile Night	Robertson Hall, Johnson Board Room	LSU’s Baile Night will be an event that will consist of dancing and a variety of music in Latino culture played by a live DJ. Students will have the opportunity to socialize and have a fun night while experiencing what Latino culture has to offer. Snacks will also be provided. No registration required.
8:30 – 10:00 PM	Trivia Night	Atherton Union, Reilly Room (Map)	Come showcase your inner nerd at Trivia Night! Make a team to win some prizes. Light snacks provided. Co-sponsored with University Program Council. Registration on Family Weekend registration form required to secure your spot. $2/person (Butler students are free.)

9:00 – 10:00 AM	Bagels and our Bulldog! – Mascot Class	Atherton Union, Reilly Room (Map)	Join Butler Blue IV and Evan Krauss to take a class about our Butler Mascot program. Blue will be available for photos at this event. Registration on Family Weekend registration form required. $5/person. Proceeds from this event will support the live mascot program.
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM	Brunch	Atherton Union, A-Town Café	Join Butler University faculty, staff, administrators and Family Council members at the Family Weekend Brunch. Butler Blue will also join for photos! Registration necessary. Participation will be staggered in seatings at 9:00 AM, 9:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, and 11:30 AM. Payment will be accepted at the door by credit card for those without a Butler University meal plan.

10:00 – 11:00 AM	Archives Tour	Irwin Library (Map)	Join Special Collections, Rare Books, and University Archives on the 3rd floor of the Irwin Library for a peek inside what treasures are hidden in plain sight right here at Butler. The Ovid Butler letter book, The Collegian student newspaper dating back to 1886, an 1860 Chinese calligraphy scroll, and more will be available for viewing during this tour. No registration necessary. **Please plan to arrive at the library main entrance promptly at or before 10:00 AM. The tour will start prior to the opening of the library though a staff member will be able to let you in at this time.
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM	“Taste of Butler” with Butler Dining	Grassy space east of Starbucks Patio (north end of Atherton Union) (Map) In case of inclement weather, this event will take place in the lobby of Irwin Library.	Butler Dining invites you to join them in the grassy, open space outside Starbucks from 10:00-12:00 PM for a Taste of Butler. Immediately following, Bon Appetit leaders will conduct a behind-the-scenes tour of the Marketplace at Atherton Union where you can visit our kitchen, ask questions about our food preparation and options, and receive a voucher for a free meal this weekend. Parents and students interested in joining Bon Appetit leaders for the kitchen tours should meet at the south entrance of the café in Atherton at 11:00 AM. No registration necessary.
10:00 – 11:00 AM	Cultural Diversity Drum Circle Basket Balancing Race	Star Fountain (Map) Rain Location: A-Town Market Auxiliary Room (Lower Level of Atherton Union)	Join us at Star Fountain for the Indianapolis Cultural Diversity Drum Circle’s Basket Balancing Race and support girls education in Uganda. Watch as student teams compete to run balancing baskets on their heads and try with your friends and family! No registration necessary.
10:30 AM – 12:30 PM	Family Weekend Spirit Zone	Health & Recreation Center (HRC) lawn (Map) Rain location: Inside the Health & Recreation Center (HRC) (Map)	Families can pick up spirit beads, boom sticks, pom poms and other cheer wear for the Butler Football Game. There will be lawn games, fall treats, a photo opportunity and other family fun items! No registration necessary.
10:30 AM – 12:00 PM	Service Project: Dog Toys	Atherton Union, Reilly Room (Map)	Join the Community Engagement Program Council for a fun morning of service in the Reilly Room which is in Atherton Union. Bring your family and friends to make dog toys that will be donated to Paws and Think. This is a come and go event, so stop by anytime!
10:30 AM – 12:00 PM	Butler Men’s Basketball Open Practice	Hinkle Fieldhouse	The men’s basketball program will open their practice and welcome fans to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday morning with a scheduled conclusion at approximately noon. Event website. No registration required.
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM	Build Your Own Bulldog – Session 2	Fairview House: Community Room (Map)	Build your very own stuffed bulldog, decorate a t-shirt, and make some memories! Registration on Family Weekend registration form required. Cost: $20/bulldog. Registration required.
11:00 AM – 2:00 PM	Latinx Alumni Association Family Tailgate: Almuerzo de Familias	Hinkle Fieldhouse Parking Lot (Map)	Join the Latinx Alumni Association for a Almuerzo de Familias to bring our families together through food, music, and community! No registration necessary.
11:00 AM – 3:00 PM	Delt Dunk 2024	4340 Haughey Ave (near South Campus)	Delta Tau Delta will be hosting its annual philanthropic event, a 3v3 basketball tournament which raises money to support the Robert Packard Foundation for ALS Research. Along with the tournament, there will be food available from Chick-fil-A as well as raffle prizes, appearances from Butler basketball players, and more! Head over to Butler Esports Park this Saturday and Sunday for a free weekend of PC, console, and board games! Enjoy the games in the Esports Park—current students can get in with their membership, or you can buy one on-site for $25 per semester.
4:00 – 6:00 PM	Yard Games	Atherton Mall (Map) Rain location: Fairview House Community Room (Map)	Families and students are welcomed to play an assortment of games out on Atherton Mall, right at the heart of campus. Register ahead of time on the Family Weekend registration form if you wish to participate in a cornhole competition! Event co-sponsored by University Program Council.
4:00 – 5:00 PM	BUDM Hour of Hope	Atherton Union, Reilly Room / Outdoor Steps	$15/ticket. RSVP on the H(OUR) BUDM Registration form. (Children 12 & under are free!) Join Butler University Dance Marathon (BUDM) for an interactive banquet where you can experience an hour of Butler University Dance Marathon. Throughout the event you will experience first-hand what Butler University Dance Marathon is, what we do, and who we stand for. Your ticket will include access to a silent auction and an array of appetizer food options. From Morale dances to guest speakers and minute-to-win-it games, you won’t want to miss this BUDM Experience, all for the children at Riley! We hope you will join us in the movement to advocate for Riley Hospital for Children. Dress is casual or Butler Spirit Wear! Registration necessary.

Outdoor Recreation Opportunities, On & Off Campus

Daily 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM	Butler University Pickle Ball courts open	North of Sellick Bowl, Tennis Bowl parking lot (Map)	Butler University has fresh Pickle Ball courts that are open to those with a Butler ID. Families are welcome to join their students for a match! To access the courts, students should bring their Butler ID to gain access to one of the four courts via a Butler ID card reader. The courts are north of the Sellick Bowl and hours run from 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM with lights in the evening. If the courts are full, participants can “drop-in” to make it known they will be rotating in. If the courts are not full, participants can use whichever court they would like. Paddles and balls will be available for check-out at the HRC control desk with a Butler University ID is needed.
Anytime	Butler University Ecotherapy Trails	See website for trails	Ecotherapy is a mental health practice that involves engagement with the natural environment to work through mental health challenges and increase wellness. You can try ecotherapy right here on campus! Use Ecotherapy Trails, either Route 1 or Route 2 to get you started.
Sunrise – Sunset website for specific hours	The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields	1850 W. 38th St. Indianapolis, IN 46228 (Map)	This nearby nature park is perfect to experience nature and art. There is no charge for this nature park.
